Hit Me Baby One More Time

Girl, you know it's true. You rock out to Manilow when no one is looking and tear up every time you hear Eternal Flame. You haven't felt the same about Open Arms since your first slow dance in the seventh grade. And a time or two you've even asked your friends to tell you what they want, what they really really want.

Ahh yes. They're the songs you truly cherish but wouldn't ever admit to knowing, let alone loving. They hold a special place in your iPod under "Guilty Pleasures" and should anyone find them, you'll swear they were put there by accident... until you're busted belting out I Will Survive like the disco fan you really are.

So, go ahead, 'fess up. You owe it to yourself, not to mention Hanson, Britney, Bolton and all those other guilty pleasure providers out there. What are those songs you hear that should make you cringe but instead make you turn up the volume a little louder and get down with your bad, guilty self?

Oh my gosh, I could go on and on with these. A few highlights:

"Lips of an Angel" by Hinder. This has got to be one of the worst songs ever written, and the lead singer's voice is truly frightening. But after we made so much fun of it, this song now reminds me of A Pea and I recently found myself not changing the station when I heard it. I even sang along. [Hangs head in shame.]

"Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf. A classic. Just ask 7:10jen.

"It Takes Two" by Rob Bass. I drive along and sing to that bad boy like I cut my baby teeth on rap.

"Boom I Got Your Boyfriend" by MC Luscious. See Above.

Various Air Supply, REO Speedwagon and Chicago songs.

And, of course, gotta throw some Barry in there... I love "Copa Cabana" and "Mandy." There. I said it.

yes i might be one indie rock girl, and listened to punk rock and hardcore most of my adult life. But i have a soft spot for Toni, Tony, Tone...and En Vogue.

As of late tho my commercial weaknesses have been various Rap i wouldn't normally be into. Kane, Jay-Z, Common, and 50-cent. oy

Don't ask

I actually have some random Kelly Osbourne song on my iPod right now, just because it was part of a mixed collection that is great to run to. I had to change the name of the artist, though -- I was too embarrassed to have it on there and have it discovered by a friend browsing my collection.

Other embarrassments: One of the first songs I sung karaoke to was "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond. And, I still break out my Bel Biv DeVoe tape every once in a while -- I ask you, has there ever been any better advice than "never trust a big butt and a smile"?

Amen to that.

"Lips of a Angel." So guilty. I actually refer to it as the Ode to Infidelity and must confess that even before T Pea shared her growing affection for the song, I found it growing on me more and more.

As far as others, listing individual songs would take me far too long. I'll stick with genres. Bubble gum pop (nothin' like some N Sync), 80s hair bands (love 'em all) and even disco (KC and the Sunshine Band? guilty as charged).

Most shocking guilty pleasure? Heavy R&B/Rap. Not like I'm Michael Bolton in Office Space (you know you remember that scene at the beginning!) but I listen to my fair share of Kanye, 50 Cent, T-Pain, Chris Brown. And I dance when I hear them... thank God I live alone! I just love the beats, and it seems like the dirtier the song, the better I like it. What is that about? Seriously, like you were expecting that from this girl? :)

Yikes - I think I'm even going to scare myself here. Of course I've got the essential 70's on my iPod: Earth, Wind, & Fire, Peaches & Herb, Gloria Gaynor, Chic ("Le Freak rocks!!) and Thelma Houston, and definitely the guilty pleasures of the 80's: George Michael (I still like to pretend I'm a supermodel as I'm lip synching the words to "Freedom"), Scandal, Night Ranger ("Sister Christian" still makes me tear up..), Guns and Roses, and C + C Music Factory. Then there are the couple of songs I would die if anyone saw me singing along to: Tal Bachman's "She's so High" and Rhianna's "Shut Up and Drive" (there, I said it). However, my most shameful admission is that I LOOOVE The Carpenters. ("Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby...) In fact, I think I'll go sing along now...where's my hairbrush???

I have to admit... there is a local radio station that does a feature called "That request sucks", which many of the songs listed here have been featured. I seem to know the words to all of those songs and love to listen to it. Too many songs to list...

The other thing that I do that I have to confess to... is the christmas music addiction I have... I love all of it, anytime of year (even July sometimes). Like the Alvin and the Chipmunks, how can you deny a classic like that!

Just after I feather and flip my mullet I make sure that my acid-washed jeans are inappropriately tight... they're pegged. I smooth my mustache with my fingertips... It may be thin but it lets others know that I'm no longer a boy. I carefully crawl into my black '81 Firebird... with T-tops. Girls you can look, I know you want to... but don't make a move. For I'm a one woman man... Her name is Tonya. Or is it Tina? Maybe Tiffany. Ah, doesn't matter... She's got the mane of a lion and the hottest torn jean jacket I've ever seen. So, I'm in my 'bird... I crank up the stereo and the best bridge in rock history kicks on... "When we started this band all we needed, needed was some laughs. Years gone by I say we've kicked some a**. When I'm enraged to hit the stage, adrenaline rushin' through my veins, I say we're still kickin' a**."

Words to live by my friends. Geesh these pants are tight.

Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden. "I'll be your dream, I'll be your wish, I'll be your fantasy..." Yeah, you know what I'm taking about, don't try to deny it. :)

I cracked up over Mrs. Stephens' comment, as I too know of the radio station she is referring to. I actually like most of the songs they play during that snippet and totally sing along to them all. lol.
