Blah blahh. Blah blahhh. Blah blahblahblah. Blah.
Okay, so maybe your dream castaway turned out to be a bit of a flake. Who won't shut up. And yammers on all day long about...well...you're not quite sure. You tuned him/her out 3 days ago.
So fine. We'll allow you a distraction -- something to help you escape from your misery. Something to stimulate your mind but that, mercifully, does NOT TALK BACK.
As you're strolling along one day (on the other side of the island, of course), you suddenly trip. What's this? A book! You've covered every inch of the island and have never found this before! A book a book a book! Hallelujah!
You just may stay sane another day.
Which book do you hope to discover on your walk?

As a card carrying book snob, I don't think it's possible for me to choose *one* book. It's too hard. There are so many good ones out there. So, instead, I'm going to play out a few scenarios just to make things difficult :)
Based on the mood I'm in, I would find the following books:
Lighthearted - Bridget Jones' Diary. This book never fails to make me laugh, no matter how many times I read it. I absolutely love it and know it's the reason I became the chick lit aficionado I am today. Or maybe Boy Meets Girl. How can I not love a book that takes place entirely over email?? (shout out to you, t pea :)) If my island really is a fantasy, the book would somehow magically contain the originals and sequels for each of the above mentioned titles.
Serious - The Giver. Every time I read this book, I find something new. Children's book or not, it is one of the most thought-provoking things I have ever read. Ditto to the above comment about sequels. Box set, please.
Curious - The Da Vinci Code. I would have the chance to read it a little closer and try to figure things out better as I go. I think I missed a lot the first time b/c I was just trying to finish it to see what all the hype was about.
Scientific - The Time Traveler's Wife. Okay, so it's not scientific... but it's about as close to science fiction as I get. Plus, it's a love story in its own right, and we all know I'm a sucker for those deep down.
Creative - A notebook of empty pages. This would give me the opportunity to finally put down my thoughts on paper for the novel that continually grows in my mind. What better time than while stranded on a beautiful, peaceful island?
I forgot to answer yesterday!
I think I'll have to go with The Time Traveler's Wife. Hands-down, my favorite book ever. (Although A Pea's answer of The Giver made me rethink my choice for a split second.)
If, for some happy reason, an actual series got plopped in my lap, I'd have to go with Harry Potter. I know, I know. Not very original, but there it is.
Should I leave another smart alec answer, like "Stranded on an Island for Dummies". No, I've left enough of those lately.
Where the Sidewalk Ends. Since my daughter and I have recently become poetry fans (even if Shel is the "bad boy of children's poetry"... Is that possible?) I would want to read something that would bring happy thoughts of her.
I would probably bring my Big Book of Alcoholics Annoymous incase in I found a lot of "letter in a bottle....and the bottles were still full!" LOL
So the answer I should give, of course, is The Bible. But that has been sitting on my bedside table for years and I rarely crack it, so why do I think it would be any different on the island?
The Begariad or the The Mallorean, but only if I could have the whole series.
Caddie Woodlawn. I loved that book when I was a little girl.
Or maybe, hmmmm... The Handmaid's Tale. That might make me less sad that I am on a deserted island and no longer part of the world at large!
No one has been able to pick just one!!! I tend to read historical fiction and non-ficiton; I know, I am a party girl. Non-fiction: Guns, Germs and Steel. Fiction: Something by James Michener--like Texas or Alaska...something long that would take me forever to read.
I know, I am weird. Also, I would love to happen on the entire trilogy by Dante, not just the Inferno, but Paradiso and Purgutorio, but I would need some cliff's notes to fall too to help me read it.
Oh, and while we are at it, a kid's book: Bridge to Terabithia. I actually cry every time I read or hear this one (and that's saying something!)
I am a total book junkie and could NEVER pick ONE book!!! This would be torturous for me. So, I'll just say 'I Know This Much Is True' by Wally Lamb. That's the last book I read and it was excellent. It's over 800 pages so it would take me a long time to read again. I would also love any and all James Patterson and Mary Higgins Clark books to fall into my lap. If I had books and Lenny Kravitz on this island, I'd never want to leave.
