Just Like Mom Made

There are certain foods that mom or grandma makes/made that no one else out there can quite duplicate. Try as they might, nobody can capture the creaminess of her mashed potatoes, recreate the taste and texture of her apple pie (with homemade crust) or find the perfect crispy/chewy balance of her chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven.

You may have even tried a time or two to make these coveted dishes yourself after painstakingly writing her exact recipe and following the directions to a T, but you were still a little disappointed that your efforts lacked that certain special something. There's no way to recapture the extra dash of this or pinch of that that make her everyday dishes outstanding.

Fill in the blank: "No one can make _____________ quite like my mom/grandma."

Cath is an amazing cook, let me just say that right now. This list could go on for days.

No one can make mashed potatoes like my mom. Hers are simple (like us, ha!) but I absolutely love them.

No one can make chili like my mom. I have tried (and failed) to duplicate this one. Didn't even come close!

No one can make snickerdoodles like my mom. Her secret trick makes these the best treat ever (esp. fresh from the oven).

No one can make creamed chicken like my mom and dad. It's a group effort, per the comment below.

I must give solo credit to my dad too. No one can make gravy like my dad. He wins for the world's smoothest, least lumpy gravy. That man has some serious talent in the gravy category.

1. Stuffing like my Grams. No spices, no anything extra, and it is awesome.

2. Cat food cookies like my Grams (she had chocolate chips and the car food in the same kind of mason jars and just grabbed the wrong one.)

3. Hockey puck pork chops like my Mom. (Totally not fair because with 4 kids and one income what in the heck was she supposed to make besides fish sticks and hot dogs...but she really can't cook).

My grandma (dad's mom) used to make coconut white chocolate fudge every year at Christmas...and it was fantastic! In the 15 years since she has died, we have all tried to duplicate that fudge, and no one can get it quite right. Lots of fun trying!

No one can make lasagna like my mommy.

No one can make Coconut Layer Cake like my grandma.

No one can make Mac and Cheese like my mom.

Crap, I can't eat any of this stuff anymore either. Oh wait, I can have mac and cheese and lasagna with whole grain pastas, yippeeeeee!

I hate to steal from A Pea's thread... but my Mom makes the best pies. Apple and rhubarb. And it is all about the crust.

You should be proud Mom... Your sons may not have turned out perfect but your pies do.

No one can make Matza Ball soup like my grandma (not that I ever tried very hard).
Grandma also made some interesting Mac & Cheese. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized that her's was so funny tasting because she used "skim milk" in it. hmmmmm. Grandmas healthy tricks again!
