Summer, summer, summertime

Okay, we officially suck. We're slackers. We admit it. It's summer, it's hot, and, well, okay, I'm out of excuses.

I've been lamenting the fact that my kids will never have a "real" summer vacation. Sure, they won't have school, but they'll spend their days at the Y or at Parks Department day camps or whatever else we can scrounge up to keep them occupied during the day while we work. I'm so sad that they won't be bumming around the house, riding bikes around the neighborhood, exploring the back yard.... you get the idea.

What did you enjoy doing during the summers when you were little?

We didn't have a ton of kids in our neighborhood, so it was pretty much just me, my sister and our neighbors -- Marney and Joey. And then just me, Marney and Joey as my sis got older and into tennis and stuff. We rode our bikes, swam in our pool, played tag and hide & seek, went to the mall, and took group trips to the doctor (because, of course, we'd *all* get sick at the same time and since we all saw the same ped, we'd pile in the grocery getter and off we'd go!). It was great.

One day when we were bored, we made up this game called "People Polo." We all grabbed a broom or a rake or whatever other long-handled device we could find in our garages. And then we'd find a ball -- tennis ball or kick ball or whatever -- and play 2 on 2. One goalie, one shooter. I think sometimes we were on roller skates, but that part is a bit foggy. Anyway, the game stuck and we used to play it all of the time. It was great!

I wonder if they still remember that.... Marney and Joey, are you out there??

i used to spend my summers riding bikes, swimming at the beach (which was, in actuality, a lake with a beach area) or the pool, exploring the woods and the creeks the ran through them, and playing macgyvor.

ah, those were the days. now my summers are filled with meetings, deadlines, and stress.

There weren't many neigborhood kids when I was around, but the few there were, I got into the usual trouble with. Unfortunately some of the trouble got me injured quite a bit as I remember wiping out on my bike more than once and somehow, someway, I got hit the head with part of a brick (which could explain my mind these days)
