Earworm

One of the main reasons that I can't wait for winter to be over is: country music.

Yes, country music. I can't stand it. A song here or there isn't too bad, but I just can't stand listening to song after song after song. Unfortunately, school closings in our area are announced on the local country music station. So, every winter I reset my clock radio to Indiana 105 ( o/~ Indiana 105 wea-ther! ~\o ) and listen for the school closings in between hitting the snooze button on blustery/icy mornings.

This morning, however, I was treated to an oldie but goodie -- Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." Unfortunately, it is now stuck in my head and I just can't shake it.

You got to know when to hold 'em,
(When to hold 'em!)
Know when to fold 'em,
(When to fold 'em!)
Know when to walk away,
And know when to run.

Those earworm songs are like leeches -- you just can't shake 'em! They move in to your brain, unpack, and settle back into their recliners for the long-haul before you know what hit you.

What are some of the songs that make you think, "Oh, no.... this is going to stick in my head for the next week!" as soon as you hear the first few notes?

How about "Night Train" on Thomas the Tank Engine, T-Pea? Just reading that title will ensure that earworm is planting its mobile home in your left temporal lobe...

Har har. If anything ever made me want to take a sledgehammer to the TV, it's that *&^%$#@! song.

The songs that always stick in my head are:

- American Pie
- The theme song to The Greatest American Hero
- Leavin' on a Jet Plane

Ok, so I bought Blake a Guitar Hero (which I'm pretty sure I play w/ more then he does) but there is a song on there (can't remember by who) but I think it's called "hit me with your best shot." All day long I walked around my office going "hit me with your best shot.......fire away!" That's probably a bad song to sing around your boss. hmmmmm.

OK, my answer here is very influenced by my 3-year-old daughter. First, she watches various kids shows in the morning while we are getting ready for the day: Word World (it's time to build a word, let's build it, let's build it now!) and Higglytown Heroes (I'm Higglytown hero, brave and true, I help the town with the job I do!)

In addition to kid's TV themes which make me crazy, she has also insisted that we listen the Polar Express soundtrack in the car. Every day. Since before Chistmas. There's a song on there called "hot chocolate" (hot, hot, hot, we got it, hot hot, hey we've got it, hot hot hot we got it, HOT CHOCOLATE! Keep it cookin' in the pot....)
I swear I think my head is going to blow up if I hear it again...because then I sing it all day long. Hot hot hot!

Now I'm singing 'hit me with your best shot' -pat benatar. I love that song on Guitar Hero as well.

That song that opens all the Vacation movies "Ho-li-day Ro-o-o-o, o-o-oad" always gets me too.
