Hangin' Tough

Break out your Monkees lunch box and whip out those NKOTB buttons - teen idols are back! Faster than you can say Hannah Montana, the next generation of teen superstars has stormed the world, poised to ride the wave of superstardom before assuming their rightful places in Teen Idol History, cozied up in between David Cassidy and Color Me Badd.

Maybe you don't get the new obsession with today's teens. What's so special about brothers who sing? Been there, done that, Jonas Brothers. Ever heard of Hanson? Chances are, you're a little too old to understand why Zac Efron is so dreamy b/c in your world, High School Musical is just something your senior class did every spring. But someone even begins humming the first few lines to Greased Lightnin', and you're back at Rydell High quicker than you can hand jive.

So quit playin' games with my heart. Confess to these teen stars that had you swooning as you pored over the pages of Teen Beat, ripping out pictures and posting them above your bed as only a true fan would. We know the plot to Stand By Me wasn't the real reason you kept coming back for more, Corey lover. Spill it. Who were/are your favorite teen idols?

  1. I hate to admit it, but I had a Debbie Gibson poster that I used to kiss good night before going to bed.

Now I can't kick her out of my house!

  2. NKOTB - I had the posters (one of each guy, except Danny because he wasn't attractive at all), every cassette tape, I had figurines, and I had a pillow that I slept with every single night.

That pillow is now in my parent's attic. We saw it the other day while digging for baby clothes. My husband about died laughing until I reminded him of his frayed, holey Journey t-shirt that he still wears on the weekends.

Tiffany - remember "I think we're alone now?" man, what a great song!

  3. I loved River Phoenix! I was so sad when he died. It was a real tragedy in my life.

I also liked Kirk Cameron and Chad Allen.

    And, of course, Rick Schroder.

I never had anything other then posters hanging on my wall, and I don't think I ever kissed them. I just thought they made attractive wallpaper.:)

  4. How did you know that "Stand by Me" was permanently in my VCR? "Not if I see you first..." Sigh. I watched that scene over and over and over.

River Phoenix was my true love. Posters everywhere - I even made a collage of all of the small pictures that I found of him in magazines. Loved. Him. My roommate and I mourned when he died.

  5. I had a Motley Crue poster in my room, and while I didn't kiss it, I did use it as inspiration while I rocked out with my $50 used electric guitar.

Hmmm. Maybe if I would have kissed it things would have turned out differently... You know, for good luck. Of course, that would have been a bit awkward when Dad walked in.

  6. Rider Strong of Boy Meets World was going to marry me. I loved him, bad hair, flannel shirts and all.

NKOTB of course, minus Donny. He was just weird. So was that guy w/the big nose. And Danny. So I guess just Jordan and Joey? Sigh... Joey.

Why can't I think of any more? I was pathetic and didn't have a real date until I was 16. Surely I drowned my sorrows in many more teen idol crushes, right?

  7. Erin, I think your husband and I are going to have to share Tiffany stories. I have a picture of a young chubby me with braces and spiked hair proudly holding up my new Tiffany album. She had such beautiful red hair...

My true crush in my teenage years was on Kylie Minogue. In fact, I still have a crush on her.

When I was *much* younger, I thought Mary Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie was cute. That's when I was into the rustic, outdoors-y type. :)

  8. C'mon T Pea. Get in touch with your prairie side. Whip out those long checked dresses, grow out the hair into pigtails and learn how to churn butter. You can do it!

  9. I never said it was cool to kiss a poster on your wall. Trust me, it may be the most uncool thing I have done.

Don't worry about the Journey shirt, I still have and wear a David Lee Roth concert shirt.

I also forgot about Alyssa Milano...and the sweet and sultry Rue McClanahan. She was so naughty on Golden Girls.

  12. Small Wonder! I *loved* that show! Plus, Grace from Ferris Bueller was the next door neighbor... you can't go wrong.

  13. i adored joey from nkotb. i swore that while attending one of their concerts (yes, i attended more than 1...or 2...or 3...) i would be plucked from the audience and whisked backstage to meet him. at his request, of course. because i was totally rocking those tight rolled jeans of mine and nkotb concert tee.

i loved, loved, loved sean astin in goonies and toy soldiers. but i'm not digging him so much now.

ps. a pea, you crack my sh*t up. your writing is *hilarious!*
